Flu - Influenza

A pesar de que la Influenza AH1N1
ha infectado a millones de Estadounidenses,
sólo se han reportado 556 muertes (hasta el 3 de Septiembre de 2009)
frente a las 36.000 muertes anuales
que en ese país causa la Influenza Estacional.

La Influenza Estacional es como una gripe común,
pero mucho más fuerte y cambiante,
por lo que hay que vacunarse contra ella cada año.

Síntomas adicionales son:
Fiebre, debilidad, dolores corporales, dificultad al respirar.

Es generada por virus diferentes a los de la gripa común
y afecta partes delicadas de los pulmones que pueden evolucionar
en neumonía y causar la muerte,
principalmente en la población más vulnerable:

Menores de 9 años
y
Mayores de 60 años

Es una vacuna vital para todos aquellos
que vivan en paises estacionales, o que viajen a ellos,
haciéndolo con al menos 2 semanas de anticipación al viaje
(Lo ideal es un mes, o mes y medio antes)
y asesorados por un medico de confianza.

¿La gripe (influenza) y el resfríado común son la misma cosa?

No, la gripe es causada por el virus influenza, un virus mutante que altera sus características de tanto en tanto, conocido desde el punto de vista científico, como Myxovirus influenzae. Los síntomas de la gripe ó influenza son más generalizados e importantes que incluye fiebre alta, dolores corporales, cefaleas, tos y sensación de extrema debilidad. El resfrío común es causado por otros virus respiratorios (como el virus sincicial respiratorio, el parainfluenza, el rhinovirus, el adenovirus) y aún cuando los síntomas son similares, se localizan más en el tracto respiratorio superior (nariz y garganta), normalmente más leves y de corta duración.

¿Cuál es el riesgo de contraer una gripe ó influenza?

A pesar de que frecuentemente presenta la imagen de un proceso benigno, la gripe ó influenza mata a millones de personas por año. Esto se debe a que, aún cuando presenta un bajo índice de mortalidad por episodio, la gripe o influenza es una enfermedad muy común (más del 10% de la población mundial sufre por lo menos un caso de gripe ó influenza por año) y puede llevar a serias complicaciones en individuos débiles, como neumonías virales y bacterianas, causando la hospitalización e incluso la muerte. En adultos jóvenes sanos, la gripe ó influenza afecta directamente la calidad de vida, resultando en un gran malestar y sufrimiento para usted y su familia.

¿Cómo prevenirse contra la gripe ó influenza?

Está comprobado que la vacunación es el medio más eficaz en la prevención antigripal. Año tras año, más de 150 millones de personas son vacunadas contra la gripe ó influenza en países de todo el mundo, como los Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Francia, Uruguay, Argentina, Brasil, etc.

Si el virus de la gripe ó influenza es mutante, ¿cómo se puede tener una vacuna?

La vacuna está compuesta por 3 tipos de virus influenza y esta composición es actualizada año tras año. Forman parte de la composición los 3 principales virus de la gripe que están en circulación en esa region o hemisferio y durante esa temporada, según lo define la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), tomando en cuenta los datos de vigilancia epidemiológica de la gripe en distintas partes del globo.

La vacuna, ¿es adecuada para Colombia?

Sí. La composición de la vacuna usada en nuestro medio es recomendada anualmente por la OMS sobre la base de las informaciones obtenidas en varios países del hemisferio norte. Además, por tomar en consideración los virus que están circulando en otras partes del mundo, la vacuna confiere además protección para los vacunados que viajen al exterior, a otros paises del hemisferio.

¿La vacuna protege realmente contra la gripe (influenza)?

Sí. La vacuna protege contra la gripe (influenza). La vacuna antigripal (influenza) posee una eficacia comprobada que varía entre un 70 y un 90% en personas sanas. O sea, de cada 10 personas vacunadas, entre 7 y 9 no contraerán gripe, mientras que 1 a 3 podrán presentar la infección, en este caso con los síntomas en general más leves que si no se hubiesen vacunado. El resfrío comun, debido a que es causado por otros virus, no se prevene con la vacuna.

Incluso recibiendo la vacuna ¿se puede contraer la gripe ó influenza??

Dado que la eficacia de la vacuna varía entre 70 y 90% y que depende de la coincidencia entre los tipos de virus circulando y los que componen la vacuna, algunas personas vacunadas pueden contraer la enfermedad (10 a 30%). En estos casos, los síntomas suelen ser más leves, similares a los de un resfrío común. Es importante el recordar que la gripe (influenza) es distinta del resfrío común. La gripe (influenza) es causada solamente por el virus influenza, mientras que los resfriados son causados por otros virus. Además, el cuadro gripal está formado por una serie de síntomas inespecíficos que pueden deberse a otras infecciones virales no respiratorias. Por ejemplo, el inicio de un cuadro de hepatitis viral puede ser confundido con una gripe (influenza). El inicio de una varicela (antes de la aparición de las erupciones) puede generar síntomas gripales (fiebre, cefaleas). Una vacuna no protege contra resfriados ni contra rinitis.

¿La vacuna puede provocar gripe (influenza)?

No. La vacuna antigripal es producida con particulas de virus inactivos (muertos), altamente purificados y por consiguiente, sin la capacidad d e reproducirse en el organismo de la persona vacunada. Por ende, la vacuna antigripal no puede causar la enfermedad bajo ningun concepto.

¿La vacuna antigripal es segura?

La vacuna antigripal es muy segura. Eventualmente puede provocar un poco de dolor y enrojecimiento en el área de aplicación de la inyección. Raramente puede aparecer fiebre leve, malestar y dolor del cuerpo. En general, estas reacciones desaparecen espontáneamente dentro de las 24-48 horas.

¿Quién puede recibir la vacuna?

Toda persona, a partir de los 6 meses de edad, que quiera evitar la gripe ó influenza y sus complicaciones puede ser vacunada.

¿Quién debe recibir la vacuna?

Las personas con mayor riesgo de complicaciones en caso de infección deben recibir la vacuna, tales como las personas adultos (especialmente todas las personas mayores de 50 años), personas con problemas pulmonares (incluyendo asmáticos y fumadores), diabéticos, hipertensos, individuos con problemas cardíacos, embarazadas a partir del 3er mes de gestación, así como los familiares de estas personas y los profesionales de la salud.

¿Cuándo conviene recibir la vacuna?

Se debe recibir la vacuna todos los años, antes del periodo de alta epidemia de la enfermedad (entre los meses de sept-nov). Esta es la recomendación, por cuanto la vacuna requiere de 2 semanas para inducir alguna protección y de 4 a 6 semanas para que se alcance la protección máxima. Dado que el invierno es el período de mayor circulación del virus, la administración de la vacuna en este tiempo garantiza una protección máxima durante el período más crítico.

¿Cuáles son las precauciones relacionadas con el uso de la vacuna?

Algunas enfermedades graves o febriles pueden afectar el uso de la vacuna, ya que los síntomas de estos procesos pueden ser confundidos con posibles efectos colaterales. Además, es necesario que su médico sepa si usted presentó el síndrome de Guillain-Barré. La vacuna antigripal no debe ser administrada a portadores de enfermedades neurológicas en curso.

¿Cuáles son las contraindicaciones a la administración de la vacuna?

Las contraindicaciones de la vacuna antigripal son la alergia verdadera (reacción anafiláctica) a cualquier componente de la vacuna: la proteína del huevo, por cuanto los virus contenidos en la vacuna son cultivados en huevos embrionados de gallina; la neomicina, un antibiótico; el timerosal (o tiomersal), conservante de la vacuna. La alergia verdadera (shock anafiláctico) es el episodio que se desarrolla poco después de la aplicación de la vacuna. Hay que resaltar que este tipo de alergia es raro, difiere de un simple malestar o una alergia cutánea, pudiendo dejar secuelas o incluso llevar a la muerte. En general, los individuos que padecen alergia verdadera a esos componentes ya tienen conocimiento de este problema.

¿Las embarazadas pueden recibir la vacuna?

La vacunación antigripal está recomendada por la Comisión Asesora de Prácticas en Inmunización de los Estados Unidos (ACIP) para embarazadas a partir del 3er mes de embarazo, la mujer debe consultar a su médico. La preferencia de realizar la vacunación a partir del segundo trimestre de embarazo trata de evitar la asociación temporal con la ocurrencia de abortos espontáneos, común durante el primer trimestre de gestación. Por otro lado, independientemente del estado del embarazo, se debe considerar la vacunación antes de la temporada de gripe en aquellas mujeres que presentan condiciones de salud que aumentan el riesgo de complicaciones por el virus influenza.
